The CAL is Brewing

Well, over the past few weeks I was putting the finishing touches on the first chunk of the Comprehensive Aramaic Lexicon redesign.

After some surprisingly brief troubleshooting, a few days ago Dr. Kaufman was able to get the code I wrote up and working. Over the next month or two things should start going live!

I’ll post updates here as it unfolds. 🙂

Peace,
-Steve

  1. Where bulk of the of the changes are “under the hood,” cleaning up over 20-30 years of slowly accumulated code (hehe, in a sense, it was an exercise in digital dendrochronology) the lemma search interface has been completely overhauled. Some features to look forward to include:

    – A better-organized and easier to read search interface that is unicode-compliant (search in Hebrew Unicode, Syriac Unicode, or CAL code).

    – Real-time search suggestions. (To find lemmas that are listed under different lexical conventions; for example searching for “Tlyt)” will suggest results for both “Tly” and “Tlyh” as well)

    – Source and dialect tool-tips. (All acronyms, sources and abbreviations disambiguated on mouse-over.)

    – Expandable in-text citations. (Example of word use in-context.)

Once the lemma search has gone live, I’ll expound upon things a bit more in detail (perhaps even write a small manual here). 🙂

    Peace,

  2. I look forward to it! I use CAL almost everyday, it’s a phenomenal tool.

Are the in-text citations going to be taken from actual literary works or originally composed? Will they be in several dialects?

  3. The Comprehensive Aramaic Lexicon really is an awesome site, so it is exciting to find that an overhaul is in the pipeline. What I would really like to see improved for Aramaic fans is (1) a User Guide to explain what is available, (2) at least one other font, such as Hebrew square script for the Aramaic texts, even if that is not appropriate for the Aramaic time period, and (3) a CD with the Aramaic texts and morphology, so that you could browse the site offline. A lot of people would pay good money for that…
