For those of you interested in what the new lessons will look like, here’s the page of the first one as it’s going up. If all goes well it should be ready to go with audio by tonight or Sunday.

The format is similar to a “turn the page” storybook where the student starts an audio recording and then turns the page when prompted, interacting with the lesson as it progresses.

The Three Little Pigs

Three Little Pigs Cover
I had mentioned this a while back, but now’s time for a progress report. 🙂

The Three Little Pigs in Galilean Aramaic (Talte Ḥaziraya Zəˁoraya) will be available on Aramaic Designs and all major booksellers’ websites in paperback soon. I haven’t decided whether or not I’m going to release it as an e-book yet as Aramaic text is always a tricky thing for mobi and epub formats. I may release it as a PDF e-book, and an iBooks edition, though as it will preserve all the formatting.

However, in all editions there are:

  • Beautiful illustrations by L. Leslie Brooke.
  • Trilinear text:
    • Galilean Aramaic with Palestinian Vocalization Markings.
    • A transliteration of the text for easy pronunciation.
    • The English translation.
  • A lexicon at the back of the book that lists all words and word-forms used.
  • Two brief appendices that expound upon the transliteration and vocalization system.

I’m finding myself scratching my beard over a curious occurrence in Sokoloff’s Dictionary of Jewish Palestinian Aramaic. He has listed כה /kah/ and הכה /haḾah/ (both the adverb “here”) as two separate entries, however with every example he lists for כה /kah/ it appears to simply be a contraction of הכה /haḾah/ with a preposition or conjunction affixed to it.

Since this sort of contraction happens often in Galilean/JPA with words that begin with ה /he/, I am convinced that these would be better served under a single entry.

What say you, Internet?
