Given the weather and other obligations this Friday, I’m not sure I’m going to be able to make it. 🙁

Lectionary Reading: John 1:1-18

So I’m collating various extant forms of the New Testament in Aramaic to help towards my work at reconstructing any underlying Galilean Aramaic and I’ve decided to try and keep up with the weekly Lectionary readings. Keep in mind that these are rough and unedited and that the English translation of each source tries to translate things phrase-by-phrase and outline differences in word order and meaning only when they are distinct.

This should have been done on Sunday, but life happens. 🙂

Update: Khabouris added.

Syriac Keyboard for Mac OS X

I made this a long time ago and use it every day, and there has been some recent interest in getting a copy out there so here it is:

⇒ SyriacPhonetic.rsrc ⇐

You’ll also need Syriac fonts such as Meltho from Beth Mardutho to get it to work and here is the layout:

Peace,
-Steve

EDIT Dec 30: I should have given installation instructions, shouldn’t I? There seem to be a lot of steps, but they’re straightforward:

  1. In the Finder pull down the Go menu.
  2. If the Library folder isn’t there, hold down the [option] key. It will appear. Click on it.
  3. Drop SyriacPhonetic.rsrc into the Library folder.
  4. Next, go into the System Preferences.
  5. In the first row, click on Language & Text.
  6. Click on the Input Sources tab.
  7. Find “Syriac Phonetic” in the list on the left and check it.
  8. At the bottom of the window also make sure that “Show input in menu bar” is checked.

Now you should have a menu to the left of the date and time which you can pull down to switch between your main language and the Syriac keyboard (it should look like the appropriate country’s flag your computer’s default language/location is set to).

If Syriac Phonetic doesn’t appear in the list of keyboards, try logging out and logging back in before trying things again from step 4.

Enjoy!

Another “Lost Gospel”? Naw.

You’ve probably been seeing this making the rounds in the news.

A lost Syriac manuscript that depicts Jesus and Mary Magdalene?

In a word:

NO.

Robert Cargill sums it all up as good as I could myself here. Read his review, and then you honestly won’t have to read the book. In fact, just read the following paragraph. It sums it up perfectly:

The text in question is neither “lost” nor a “gospel”, and the allegorical reading of the Syriac version of Joseph and Aseneth is little more than a wishful hope that it would be so, employing little more than name substitution and a desire to prove The DaVinci Code true. Absolutely no scholar will take this book seriously. It will not change Christianity. It will not change biblical scholarship. It’s just Simcha doing what he does best: direct-to-the-public pseudoscholarship just in time for Christmas.

Efforts to legally differentiate between Christian and Muslim Arabs bore fruit on Tuesday as Interior Minister Gideon Saar ordered that the population registry recognize a separate Aramean identity.

Christians who identify with the ancient people can decide to register as Arameans instead of Arabs.
