So I’m collating various extant forms of the New Testament in Aramaic to help towards my work at reconstructing any underlying Galilean Aramaic and I’ve decided to try and keep up with the weekly Lectionary readings. Keep in mind that these are rough and unedited and that the English translation of each source tries to translate things phrase-by-phrase and outline differences in word order and meaning only when they are distinct.
This should have been done on Sunday, but life happens. 🙂

You’ll also need Syriac fonts such as Meltho from Beth Mardutho to get it to work and here is the layout:

EDIT Dec 30: I should have given installation instructions, shouldn’t I? There seem to be a lot of steps, but they’re straightforward:
In the Finder pull down the Go menu.
If the Library folder isn’t there, hold down the [option] key. It will appear. Click on it.
Drop SyriacPhonetic.rsrcinto the Library folder.
Next, go into the System Preferences.
In the first row, click on Language & Text.
Click on the Input Sources tab.
Find “Syriac Phonetic” in the list on the left and check it.
At the bottom of the window also make sure that “Show input in menu bar” is checked.
Now you should have a menu to the left of the date and time which you can pull down to switch between your main language and the Syriac keyboard (it should look like the appropriate country’s flag your computer’s default language/location is set to).
If Syriac Phonetic doesn’t appear in the list of keyboards, try logging out and logging back in before trying things again from step 4.
So, now it is time to announce an upcoming worshop on Galilean Aramaic in March as well as start finding what times work for both in-person and online Galilean Aramaic classes. Polls for the classes are below.
Galilean Aramaic: Speaking The Language of Christ
Registration is $50 (and waivers will be available for those in need) and it’s happening on March 28th, 2015 from 1PM to 4PM. It’s a condensed 3 hour workshop which goes over history, the basics of reading, writing, and speaking and some storytelling and conversation. The fee also covers printed learning materials.
Registration will be $100 (waivers also available). It will meet one hour, twice a week for four weeks (8 sessions total) at Christ Church New Brunswick and will cover introductory conversational (spoken) material, reading, writing, memorization, and recitation. Each student will keep a S’far Da‘watha (“Book of Knowledge” or “Book of Opinions,” a journal of one’s work and inspirations) in which to keep their notes and musings.
If it is well received, this class will become the first step towards a certificate program that will award, to accomplished students who pass written and oral exams, the title Talmid Leshana (“Student of the Language”).
The following poll will be used to help schedule the class.

The Online Galilean 1 Class
Registration will be $100 (waivers also available). It will meet one hour, twice a week for four weeks (8 sessions total) broadcast via webcam and will cover the same material as the In-Person class.
The text in question is neither “lost” nor a “gospel”, and the allegorical reading of the Syriac version of Joseph and Aseneth is little more than a wishful hope that it would be so, employing little more than name substitution and a desire to prove The DaVinci Code true. Absolutely no scholar will take this book seriously. It will not change Christianity. It will not change biblical scholarship. It’s just Simcha doing what he does best: direct-to-the-public pseudoscholarship just in time for Christmas.
